So cold I can see my breath!

For our northern motorcycle brethren, there is a beginning and an end to the riding season. Snow, ice, and frigid cold keep most two-wheeled transporters snug in their garages, with battery tender lifelines, for months on end.

Not so for those of us fortunate to live in the South. We ride all year, taking advantage of the sunny days, never letting the cabin fever get to a fever pitch. Making all of this possible, on those brisk, crisp winter days, is heated riding gear.

Gone are the days of wearing 37 layers in order to ride in the cold, outer layers resembling the Michelin Man, stuffed to the point of not being able to turn your head.

Under our waterproof, windproof, and armored jacket and pants, winter calls for a simple base layer and a snug-fitting heated jacket liner. Then, top the ensemble off with heated gloves. Heated riding gear has advanced to an extremely comfortable, practical solution, with thin and flexible heating elements, that make it a no-brainer for winter riding, and absolutely my favorite moto-gizmo(s). Flexible cords connect the gloves to the jacket liner, the liner to a heat controller, and ultimately, the controller to the bike’s battery. There is never a good reason to ride cold!

This post is part of the Brave, Bold, Blogger Challenge (BBBC) issued by my moto-blog friend Kathy, aka ToadMamaToadmama, to cover 28 blog prompts in the month of February. And good for undisciplined me, no rules either.

  1. I like the heated gear but I have the impression that it was never designed for daily use. I used liner and gloves for several winters here in AK for maybe 8 months at a time and ended up fixing cables and connectors more often than I can remember. But no more commuting so I don’t ride everyday through the winter anymore.

    • I think it really depends on the brand, maybe? My husband commuted for many winters, and had a couple minor issues but both Gerbing and Warm n Safe stood behind their products and repaired or replaced them.

  2. I like getting out on my bike and will try almost any weather. Mainly my protection is down to layering and gore-tex but I do have hot grips. Nice read.
